Fronting The Post

In the context of basketball, “fronting the post” refers to a defensive strategy where a defender positions themselves between an offensive player and the basket to deny them easy access to the low post area. The low post area is the region near the basket, typically on either side of the key or paint, where offensive players often try to establish position to receive passes and score close to the hoop.

When a defender is fronting the post, they position themselves between the offensive player and the ball. By doing so, they aim to prevent or disrupt the offensive player from receiving a pass into the low post and potentially scoring. Fronting the post is especially effective when defending against a taller or stronger player who relies on their size advantage near the basket.

The defender may use various techniques to front the post effectively. They may try to establish and maintain contact with the offensive player to impede their movement and make it difficult for them to receive a pass. They might also actively deny the entry pass by using their body positioning, quick footwork, and active hands to intercept or deflect the ball.

Fronting the post is a common defensive tactic employed by teams to disrupt the opposing team’s offensive flow, force turnovers, and limit scoring opportunities near the basket.
